ND Nasi Kandar and Nasi Dalca

Olla Mikes!!

It has been awhile since i posted and again my lame excuse will be "caught up with work", "late nights" and you know la.

Anyway, over this past weekends i have been traveling, yes i was bragging it to you all like a broken record, yes i still remember, so here it goes.

Few weeks ago, i was on a road trip to Penang but we spent most of our time in Bukit Mertajam area.

Hilly place, sweltering during daytime and by the time i was back to Kuala Lumpur i looked like darkened coconut husk. Of course the sea water skinny dip too. (No, just kiddinng).

I dont think i need to introduce to you all about mouthwatering island food adventure in Penang. Nasi Kandar, Char Kuey Teow, Komtar Abg Din Sweet porridge, roti jala and you name it la..all there. Today I shall introduce to you all about ND Nasi Kandar & Nasi Dalca, Butterworth.

The saying goes, where there is a long que outside eatery, you know the place is good. This is a small stall with tables and chairs arranged on the main road for sitting. Don't let the stall size fool your judgement.

The word Nasi Kandar, came about from a time when nasi rice hawkers or vendors would balance a kandar pole on their shoulder with two huge containers of rice meals. The name has remained and today the word Nasi Kandar is seen on most Tamil Muslim or "Malaysian Mamak" restaurants and Indian-Muslim stall meals. The rice for a nasi kandar dish is often placed in a wooden container about three feet high, giving it a distinctive aroma. The rice is accompanied by side dishes such as fried chicken, curried beef spleen, cubed beef, lamb, fish roe, fried prawns or fried squid. The vegetable dish would usually be (brinjal or "terong") (aubergine), okra (lady fingers or "bendi") or bitter gourd. A mixture of curry sauces is poured on the rice. This is called 'banjir' (flooding) and imparts a diverse taste to the rice.Traditionally, nasi kandar is always served with its side dishes on a single plate. Nowadays, small melamine bowls are used for the side dishes. Nevertheless, the curry sauce mix is always poured directly onto the rice

(This has been copied from Wikipedia because i am too lazy to type out the History beneath the existence of Nasi Kandar).

Melting Pots of Curries

I was super excited indulging in this sight,  intoxicating scene of never ending pots and pots of curries. So rustic and i don't know, it was just an awesome sight. See the red fiery curry in the respective pots? Mouth watering?...yes mine drooled when i took this snap.

Mutton curry
See the juicy mutton goodness? Oh, i would have just dunk my head into this. The meat was amazingly tender and it was the right amount of gaminess for me and the curry was rich and fatty. 8/10

This was my plate

I choose a piece of fried chicken and vegetable omelette with my rice grains coated and dibanjirkan with curries. 7/10.

One of the stooges plate
He opted for Nasi Dalca and in my opinion the nasi dalca wasnt really a shout out, infact it had an oily after taste. Other then that, the fried bitter gourd was alright and the chicken curry was good. 6/10

soup stall
They had a small soup stall too. You can choose from tender brisket soup to soup torpedo (cow innards soup) and its usually accompanied by sliced bread for dipping. We didnt order.

She posed and he posed too

Overall, this was a good joint for a humble and quite town like Butterworth. The meal for three of us including three drinks cause RM 24.00 and boy i a happy girl! If it can feed three for RM 50.00 the i bet its a great place! Butterworth town was kind enough to us on the day or arrival. Nothing to complain, good folks and laid back town it was. The owners were super friendly and they even asked me to take snaps of the "in nasi kandar" action.

Anyway mikes, if you'll happen to pass Butterworth do not forget to stop by here, have a comparison before you hit joints like Line Clear/* Kassim Mustaffa in the Island. Till the next post,

Ciou now!
